My definition for serious games

Serious games are designed with a purpose beyond just entertainment. They’re used for education, training, healthcare, simulations, and much more, helping players gain knowledge or develop skills while still being engaging and interactive.

What did I learn

When I first started learning about serious games, I had no clue what they were. I didn’t realize that games could have real-world applications beyond just entertainment or basic education. I also found out that for a serious game to actually work, it needs to strike a balance between being engaging and delivering useful information, otherwise it risks either boring the player or failing to teach anything at all.

Summary of the class

In this class, we explored various ways to keep players engaged, like incorporating elements such as score tracking, time challenges, and level completion. The goal was to maintain player focus while also making the game as realistic as possible to its real-world application. Throughout the course, we had plenty of in-class discussions where we shared ideas and collaborated, which helped us develop concepts more effectively than working alone. By the end of the class, my partner and I are working on a larger project focused on packing a spaceship. We’re adding a scoring system that rewards balanced weight distribution and strategic placement of necessities near the hatch. This gamified approach not only makes the experience more interactive but also helps players understand how spacecraft are packed in real life.

The Future of Serious Games

I think serious games are only going to keep growing as technology advances. With recent breakthroughs in VR and AI, we are able to do way more than before. As more people become aware of serious games, I believe they will become a key part of education across various fields. Even now, we can put surgeons in a VR space to examine a 3D brain model and plan out procedures. As hands-on experiences become more common in learning, whether in schools, careers, or everyday life the line between gaming and education will start to blur.
